Moving Towards Multiplatform Releases for Major Xbox Title

Microsoft is reportedly reassessing its strategy of keeping major titles exclusive to Xbox, with some regret over the decision to make Ninja Theory’s Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 a console exclusive. Additionally, new insights from game journalist Jez Corden suggest that Fable, another highly anticipated title, could eventually be released on PlayStation 5.
Corden, who co-hosts The Xbox Two podcast, responded on Twitter/X to a conversation about the rationale behind keeping Hellblade 2, Avowed, and South of Midnight exclusive to Xbox. He revealed that Microsoft views the exclusivity of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 as a misstep and does not plan to apply the same approach to Fable. Corden emphasized that Fable is being developed on a large budget, making its success crucial. While it may not be available on PlayStation 5 right at launch, Corden believes it will eventually make its way to the platform as part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to bring Xbox first-party titles to PlayStation over time. “It might not be day one, but it’ll come to PS5 eventually,” he said, signaling a shift toward a multiplatform approach.
Corden also noted that Microsoft’s lack of transparency regarding this strategy is to avoid putting pressure on studios that are not ready for simultaneous multiplatform development. However, he believes that the era of permanent Xbox exclusives is coming to an end, marking a significant shift in the gaming landscape.
This aligns with Microsoft’s recent actions, as four Xbox first-party games—Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, and Pentiment—are set to appear on PlayStation. Industry insider eXtas1stv also claimed that four more Xbox exclusives are soon to go multiplatform, with Corden confirming that one of these is Bethesda’s Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
While Microsoft is increasingly open to bringing its games to other platforms, some titles, like Forza Horizon 5, are unlikely to make the leap to PS5 in the immediate future. However, Fable remains a key focus. Corden recently shared that he had seen alpha gameplay footage of the game and praised its visual quality and gameplay, even drawing comparisons to CD Projekt Red’s work.
This shift in strategy highlights Microsoft’s growing emphasis on expanding the reach of its first-party titles rather than limiting them to Xbox consoles. With rising development costs, the company aims to maximize the potential audience for its games, ensuring a broader platform presence to recoup its investments.
While Microsoft may regret the exclusivity of Hellblade 2, future titles like Fable could benefit from this evolving multiplatform approach, offering a wider audience for its major releases.
