Discussion » Multi-part Vocal Harmonies » May 13, 2020 13:35:46

Intervallic Instrumentals seem to be feel natural, and do not seem to pose much of a ‘mind-bend’, however multi-part vocal harmonies over verses will be difficult to achieve without a strategy and an understanding of the way delayed intervals work.
The 3 big colors represent 3 Singers, with their corresponding little colored circles representing Verses/Chorus that they will sing or hear in the Intervals 1-9.
The 3 sections represent each individual Singer's strategy.
The Primary Singer establishes the pattern, by singing a Verse/chorus, which on the next iteration of the interval, the others hear and sing along. In this second iteration the Primary singer is silent or plays Instrumental. On the next interval, The Primary will hear the others parts and can sing the same verse/chorus adding to the other singers' vocals. This is where the Primary singer experiences > 2 part Harmony possibilities.
Vocalists may appreciate the ability to simulate singing Multi-Part Harmony in traditional songs.

Have you heard about the New York City Lean on Me (Bill Withers' tune) singalong- jamalong tomorrow at 7:02 Eastern Standard Time? People across the city (and anywhere!) will be joining in privately or publicly from their windows, kitchens, porches, living rooms, cars, etc! Links with details and chords and lyrics are attached in case you want to participate. The song will be broadcast over WBAI 99.5FM at 7:02pm, right after the cheers for health care and essential workers at 7.

Cheers and stay well,

Marcha in Brooklyn, NY

Discussion » Recommended listening to get better at jamming » April 19, 2020 23:37:03

Some of you folks are monster players, and clearly have a lot of experience jamming with others. I come from an electronic/rock background, and part of what's so fun about Jammr is the style of music tends to be very new and outside of my wheelhouse.

So, I'm wondering what listening suggestions you seasoned players would give for a drummer looking to improve their jam. My swing time could use a lot of work, but also important is pacing, how to build, when to change things up vs when to keep things the same.

I'm also looking for a way to sing together with folks online. I tried out jammr with some other singers a few days ago it worked well in some ways! I actually think this has the potential to be a super powerful tool for singing with others online, and there are many many groups who are craving this, especially in our current circumstances. I have a couple questions/suggestions for the creators:

-It seems like adding more people to a jam session increases is the delay quite a bit, both in the chat and in the audio. E.g. people are hearing what I sing several intervals after I sing it, rather than just 1 interval after. Is this true? If so, I can singing with 6,7 or 8 singers, let alone dozens, would start to get really unwieldy. Is this why the number of participants is capped at 10?

-A more technical question: it seems like the lag in the chat was increasing exponentially with the number of people in the jam. Is this true? Is it because of the underlying infrastructure? (e.g. there is 1 connection for a 2 person jam; 3 connections for 3 people; 6 connections for 4 people; 10 for 5 people, etc?). If this is the case, I wonder if there's a different way to organize the way the data is flowing so jammr can accommodate more people. For example, I can imagine all of the audio files being sent to the host, where they're synced up, merged into one audio file and then sent back to everyone (rather than each participant sending data to and from each other). This might mean that the host ends up hearing his own voice on delay, but for a singing group this wouldn't be as much of a problem.

Anyway, I could be way off base here on how jammr works, but if there's a way to accommodate larger groups of people without a really long lag, this could be a super powerful tool for online singing groups, even with the limitations around having to repeat. I know so many people who would be really excited to use this. I'm not a real programmer but I do have some quantitative background (matlab, sql, stata) and I'd be interested in talking through this with someone more capable than me to see what is possible.
Thank you!

Would it be worth designating a permanent room for helping people test audio and get setup? Rather than bursting into a room feedback squealing all over the place people could go there first and help each other with the “Am I coming through?” “Can you hear me?” questions.
Doesn't need to be recorded or anything just a safe space for people wanting to configure their gear and get pointers on how this all works.
Have heard a lot of people in rooms checking in and getting weirded out by the “massive delay” or laughing at the “poor latency” without grasping the concept and leaving.
Maybe on second thoughts the idea is not to cater for these people. I dunno though, I'd like for people to have a positive experience during these weird times.
One thing that I think also might be useful is a spoken word metronome. As a lot of times also I have heard drummers completely playing to the BPM but starting mid sequence and it getting weird. So if there was a 1, 2, 3 … etc to show where you are in the interval it might help. Optional of course.

Hey All,

I'm Adrian, I'm in New Mexico and I play keys and vocals. Mostly done classic rock and rockabilly in the past. Just trying new avenues to connect with some of my musician friends during the quarantine.
