Full Version: Works on old (2006) iMac, not on new (2019)?

I successfully set things up on my ancient (2006?) iMac using a guitar connected via irig HD with the amplitude 4 VST. Could hear myself perfectly: all good. So I know I have the right setup and am using jammr right.

However, when I repeated the same process on my new 2019 imac I couldn't hear anything at all. Not even if I used the built in mic. I know both mic and irig work fine on the new imac because I can use them outside Jammr just fine. Very frustrating as using old imac is not really a solution (for multiple reasons). I can't see any difference in the process I used or the setup…. any ideas?

I'm sure there is a significant hardware difference between old and new mac. Also, the old version is running an older OS. New mac is using catalina.

Any thoughts appreciated on how I can untangle this one? Which settings I should check etc. I can supply more details if needs be.

cheers

Hi jabbathewatts,
Please go to Help | Show log after connecting to a jam session and copy-paste the technical information that gets displayed onto the forum so I can review it.

Here is the audio setup guide with step-by-step instructions for testing audio output and input:

Is “Play back my audio” enabled in jammr's sound settings?

Can you hear the dry guitar when you join a jam session without loading a VST plugin?

Please try setting the Sample Rate to 48000 Hz in jammr's sound settings.
jabbathewatts
Thanks for looking into this.

Play back is enabled

I don't hear the dry guitar. I don't even hear signal from the built in mic if I select that as the input device.

Changing the sample rate doesn't do anything. I tried all the different settings.

Darn.

Okay, then let's not worry about the audio input for the time being.

You can check just the audio output by enabling the Metronome button in the bottom-right corner of the jammr window and connecting to a jam session. If you hear the metronome click then audio output is working.

If not, please double-check the audio output device in jammr's sound settings and any system or hardware volume controls.
jabbathewatts
Hi again

Audio is working ok as I hear the metronome. I also hear other folks playing in a jam.

The problem is, to oversimplify a bit (!), that jammr seems unable to hear any of my input devices.

Incidentally I know that the irig (or internal mic) are receiving signal when using through jammr and in a jam as I see the signal register on the irig or the sound settings panel on the mac.

When I do use a VST in jammr (like amplitube or others) they do not register the input signal either as a sound or with their input signal monitoringy displays.

Cheers

Hi jabbathewatts,
Unfortunately I don't see anything obvious in the logs. It looks like recording the iRig (or built-in mic) should work because jammr did not encounter any errors when opening the device.

I recommend trying the simplest audio configuration:
1. Quit jammr if it is currently open.
2. Stop any other applications that may use the input device. I think BlackHole should not be a problem, but haven't tried it myself. Please stop any DAWs, streaming software, amp/effects simulators, etc.
3. Launch jammr again and check that the sound settings have the iRig as the input device and “Play back my audio” enabled.
4. Connect to a jam and see if you hear the dry guitar.
5. If you cannot hear the guitar, please check the system and hardware volume controls. The dry guitar volume may be lower than you are used to with Bias FX but it should be audible.

Sorry that this is just a case of “check everything again carefully”, I would have loved to offer a solution.
jabbathewatts
Thanks for your time on this stefanha. I found the issue!! At some point I had obviously selected “no” when jammr asked to access the mic on my computer (and then completely forgotten this): I checked my privacy settings and jammr was unchecked under microphone, whereas stuff like garageband, amplitube were checked. Changing this to allow jammr access to the mic seemed to work. This also allowed my iRig to be picked up - not sure why they'd be linked: perhaps Jammr just adopts privacy settings for all audio input devices using the microphone setting…?

So it was absolutely nothing to do with some hardware of software difference between my old and new computers after all.

But I'm happy to be set up now!

Cheers

Jabba

Excellent, glad you found the issue and thanks for sharing the solution!
